Valentiny Contest Entry: Class Valentines
As an extra post … here is my story for Susanna Leonard Hill’s 2nd Annual Valentiny Contest.
As a bit of background, here are the rules for this competition:
Write a Valentines story appropriate for children (children here defined as ages 12 and under) maximum 214 words in which someone is confused! Your story can be poetry or prose, sweet, funny, surprising or anything in between, but it will only count for the contest if it includes someone confused (can be the main character but doesn’t have to be) and is 214 words (get it? 2/14 for Valentines Day You can go under the word count but not over! (Title is not included in the word count.)
Class Valentines (213 words)
“Today will be fun!” Goldie splashed in circles.
“Why?” asked Petey, the guinea pig. “Do I get extra carrots or paper rolls?”
“Just watch.”
The bell rang and kids charged to their desks.
“Okay,” said Miss K, “everyone settle down.”
“Can we do Valentines, now? Can we, please?”
“Yes, you may,” said Miss K.
Petey and Goldie watched as kids pulled stacks of paper from packs and bags.
“Wow! So much chewing!” Petey said. “Today will be fun.”
Goldie blew bubbles.
But the paper disappeared into boxes.
“Story time first,” said Miss K. “Then we’ll open Valentines.”
Petey pouted, “None for me! How is today fun?”
He leaned against the cage door. It swung open. Petey tumbled to the table, crept to a box, tipped it, and crawled in.
Petey nibbled on lace, sucked on a square, and sniffed a heart.
“Miss K, where’s Petey?” asked Karen.
The class scattered. They searched his cage, the floor, and the closet.
“Karen,” Tomas called. “Your box fell over.”
Inside, Karen found Petey asleep, clutching a heart valentine.
“Silly guinea pig,” said Tomas. “Valentines are for kids.”
“I made one for you and Goldie.” said Miss K, holding a tube with a heart treat and special heart flakes.
“Told you today would be fun,” bubbled Goldie.
