(214 words)

“It’s not fair!” Mina punched her pillow. “I’d just made friends. Why’d we have to move, again?”

Boris wagged his tail.

“Why now? Two weeks before Valentines’ Day.”

Boris laid in her lap and licked her nose.

Mina pouted and growled and stomped all weekend. She was NOT going to like THIS school. No friends, meant no Valentines! “Why does Dad have to move so often?” she asked Boris. “We’ve moved twice this year!”

Boris brought her toys, snuggled for stories, and kissed her. But nothing cheered Mina.

“Perk up soldier,” her dad said, “you’ll be fine. It’s an adventure, remember?”

Yeah, right! “Bet the kids here already made their Valentine boxes,” she said. Bet they’ve picked friends and made their cards, too.

“Well, if they did, we’ll make yours tomorrow night,” he said.

On Monday, Mina dragged her feet into class.

After introducing Mina, the teacher announced, “remember, we’re making our Valentine’s Day boxes after lunch.”

Mina’s smile lit the room. I’m not too late!

Two kids grinned back and later sat with her at lunch.

After school, Mina hugged Boris and whispered, “I made friends! And maybe – just maybe – I’ll get a box full of valentines after all.”

Boris wagged his tail and Mina kissed him back. “You’re still my best friend.”
